The Hope Appeal…providing the resources to those in need…

It is a part of the life, mission and spirit of our parish community to remember that we are connected to the work of the Church that takes place beyond our parish boundaries, as well as at home.   When Chaplains minister to patients in area hospitals, when Catholic Charities responds to the needs of families and children struggling in poverty, when college students find a continuing presence of the Church on their campus, we are a part of those ministries through the financial  support that we give through the Hope Appeal.

The purpose of the “Appeal” is simple:  Giving to others the resources necessary to serve those in need.  Since we ourselves can’t always be there to visit the sick, care for the poor or direct programs that help children and families in need,  through the Hope Appeal, we give   others the funding they need to make that happen.  And beyond those ministries, the Hope Appeal supports the offices that serve our parish community.

For example, when the Religious Education Office of the Diocese trains, updates and assists our catechists or director, Hope Appeal makes that possible.  When our parish offices and the facilities of the parish are assisted by offices dedicated to insurance and finance, it is all made possible from the Appeal.

Help us help these and many more ministries and offices that are a part of our service to the Gospel by participating in this year’s Hope Appeal.  Our goal assessment for this year is $44,659.  Help us reach that goal assessment with you contribution. Pledge cards are  available in church or have arrived at your home.

St. James Scrip…No Cash? No Checkbook? No Problem!

What is Scrip?

The dictionary describes it as “in lieu of cash”…basically, it is a gift card.

Why should I buy Scrip from St. James?

We purchase the cards at a discounted price so when you purchase them at face value St. James earns money.

Are they just “Gift “ Cards?

The cards can be used all the time: grocery shopping, eating out, buying clothes, a night at the movies, filling up your gas tank, airfare, hotels, remodeling your home, new appliances, a day at the spa, prescriptions, electronics and much more.  Stop by the Scrip table after church for a full list of retailers.

Scrip at St. James is a key on-going fund raiser that adds to our weekly collection.  For every gift card or certificate purchased, St. James receives a percentage of the sale, ranging from 2-15%.  This means that you can add to the revenue that it takes to run St. James, simply by doing the things you do anyways….such as buying groceries and other items, eating out, or buying gifts.

St.  James is now able to process scrip with electronic funds. This means that you do not need cash on hand, or your checkbook when you buy scrip after Mass.

How it works…

  1. Fill out a one-time authorization form that the Parish Office will keep on file
    1. Return it to the scrip table
    2. Drop it off at the Parish Office
  2. Each time you purchase scrip, complete a simple voucher form indicating name, date, amount, and signature
  3. Your bank account (either checking or savings) will be drafted during the week for the amount.

Download authorization form here.

With the return of grocery cards (Tops) to the program, we look to have the scrip program be one of the largest fundraisers for 2011.
